Responsive Web Design for Mobile Devices

The future is mobile. By 2014 mobile internet usage is projected to overtake desktop internet usage (source Microsoft Tag). Don’t let your business website get left behind.

Smart phones, iPhones, iPads, tablets, gaming devices, even television sets… the technology to connect to the internet has come a long way recently. The need to use a laptop or desktop computer to connect to the web has been replaced by thousands of diverse mobile devices. Designing for the web has never been so interesting, with site users ranging from those viewing your site with the widest of wide-screen desktop monitors to those viewing the site on a tiny mobile phone screen.

The cost of producing a mobile app or a bespoke mobile website is off putting for most small businesses, not just in terms of the development cost but also in the extra time it tales to maintain two versions of your website, one for desktop users and one for mobile users. The cost effective answer is responsive web design.

What Is A Responsive Website?

A responsive website is one that responds to the user. Specifically the website responds to the size of the screen that the user is using to view the site. Different website layouts are sent to the device based on its size, allowing one site, with one set of administration overheads, to serve all users.

Like An Example? This Website Is Responsive.

To see it respond just change the size of the viewport, or browser window. For example if you are on a desktop monitor (and not in Internet Explorer 8 or below) just drag the browser window smaller or larger and you’ll see the layouts change. If you are on a mobile device change the orientation from portrait to landscape, or vice-versa. Neat!

Little Bird offers a full responsive website design and development service. We also develop our websites in HTML5 and CSS3 making them perfect for use with iPhones and iPads which don’t support Flash animations.
